Increased employment in the general public sector

The increase is mainly attributed to the increase in the staff of the educational service

There is an increase in employment in the general public sector, according to data announced by the Statistical Service, which are also presented in StatWatch .

The total number of employees in the general public sector in the fourth quarter of 2023 was 75,361. In the general government employment amounted to 69,552 people and in companies and enterprises controlled by the government to 5,809.

In general government, which consists of government, non-profit organizations and local authorities, employment amounted to 54,168, 10,855 and 4,529 people respectively.

Compared to the corresponding quarter of 2022, employment in the general public sector increased by 2,765 people (3.8%).

Employment in central government increased by 2,628 people (4.2%), in local authorities by 101 people (2.3%) and in government-controlled companies and enterprises by 36 people (0.6%).

Employment in non-profit organizations (NGOs) shows an increase of 22.0%, which is due to the transfer of hourly staff from the Ministry of Health (Government) to the State Health Services Organization (NGO), from January 2023.

Compared to the third quarter of 2023, employment in the general public sector increased by 3,054 people (4.2%).

The increase is mainly attributed to the increase in the staff of the educational service (government), which is mainly due to the abolition of the service purchase regime in the supporting programs of the Ministry of Education, Sports and Youth from the school year 2023 – 2024.

In local authorities and government-controlled companies and enterprises employment remained very close to the levels of the third quarter, 2023.
