Initiation of a project to strengthen the capacities of Internal Affairs Funds in Cyprus

The general objective of the project is the effective use and absorption of the financial resources of the Internal Affairs Funds consisting of the Asylum, Migration and Integration Fund

The official launch of the project for "Strengthening capacities and improving the overall performance of the Internal Affairs Funds in Cyprus", with the holding of the opening meeting at the premises of the Press and Information Office, was announced in a statement issued on Wednesday by the Ministry of the Interior.

As mentioned, the project is financed by the Directorate-General for Structural Reform Support (DG REFORM) of the European Commission through the Technical Support Instrument (TSI) for 2023, and is implemented by the contracting company EY Cyprus Advisory Services Limited.

According to the Ministry, the general objective of the project is the effective use and absorption of the financial resources of the Internal Affairs Funds consisting of the Asylum, Migration and Integration Fund (TAME), the Instrument for the Financial Support of Border Management and the Policy of Visas (MDSTH) and the Internal Security Fund (SDF).

It is added that the project is part of the strategy promoted by the Ministry of the Interior to strengthen the capacities of the European Funds Unit (MET) as the Managing Authority of the European Home Affairs Funds in Cyprus, with the expected results of the project relating to the streamlining of procedures and the optimization of the operation of the Administrative Authority and the Management and Control System - always in accordance with the regulatory framework -, with the ultimate goal of effective management of the available funding.

It is added that within the framework of the existing project, an action plan will be developed and implemented, which will include, among other things, the development of the capacities of both the Administrative Authority and other government stakeholders.

It is noted that the effort is led by the Ministry of the Interior together with the European Commission - Directorate General for Structural Reform Support (DG REFORM), while it is expected that selected government services, departments, units, etc., which have been identified as stakeholders, will be involved. with mutual benefits for all, as the project will contribute to the efficient and transparent allocation, absorption and monitoring of financial resources.

It is also underlined that the project will be an important milestone for other EU Member States that face the same challenges with the issues of immigration, border management and the management of related financial resources.

The opening meeting was attended by representatives of the European Commission, the Ministry of the Interior, the European Funds Unit (MET), representatives of interested government bodies, while from the contractor company, members of the project implementation team as well as senior executives of EY Cyprus, EY Greece and EY of Italy, the announcement concludes.
