Limassol

The city

Limassol sits on the south coast of Cyprus, between the Akrotiri peninsula and the Amathus headland. It is the island's main port, the base of its shipping industry, and its second largest urban area, with roughly 240,000 people in the wider district.

The city runs east to west along the sea and climbs inland to the foothills of Troodos. Most journeys inside it take under twenty minutes.

The coast

A continuous promenade runs about fifteen kilometres from the old port to Amathus. The centre and marina sit at its western end; the hotel strip through Germasogeia and Agios Tychon sits at its eastern end.

Nearly everything in the city is within ten minutes of the water, which is why the difference between areas is usually height and distance from the coast road rather than distance from the sea.

The landscape

Growth is visible across Limassol. The seafront has changed substantially over the last decade, with new residential towers, offices and redevelopment around the old port and marina. Inland, Agios Athanasios, Panthea, Agia Fyla and the surrounding hills continue to absorb residential growth, while development extends east through Germasogeia and Agios Tychon and west towards Zakaki.

The result is not one new centre, but a city expanding in several directions — along the coast, into the hills and around new areas of business and residential activity.

The district

The Limassol District reaches well beyond the city: the coast west to Pissouri, the villages in the foothills such as Lofou and Trimiklini, and the mountain communities around Platres.

The wine villages sit between three and six hundred metres above the sea, close enough for a half-hour drive into the city and far enough for a different climate. Stone houses, small vineyards and restored courtyards make up most of what changes hands there, and demand has grown as remote work spread. Further up, Platres and the Troodos communities stay cooler through the summer.
