Cypriots rate life satisfaction with 7.2 out of 10

As a result, citizens in 18 of the 27 EU Member States rated their life satisfaction on average higher than or equal to the EU average.

At 7.2 out of 10, Cypriots on average rated the degree to which they were satisfied with their lives in 2022, very close to the EU average, according to the subjective well-being index recorded by Eurostat, the statistics agency of the European Union, in the context of the collection of statistics on income and living conditions.

Specifically, in 2022 EU citizens (aged 16 and over), asked to rate their overall life satisfaction from 0 (very dissatisfied) to 10 (very satisfied), answered an average of 7.1.

In 18 of the 27 EU Member States, citizens rated their life satisfaction on average above (16 Member States) or equal (two Member States) to the EU average.

The highest average scores were recorded in Austria (7.9), Finland, Poland and Romania (7.7 in each country), Belgium and the Netherlands (7.6 in each country).

The lowest average scores were recorded in Bulgaria (5.6), Germany (6.5) and Greece (6.7).

In relation to 2021, the specific index for Cyprus recorded an increase of 0.4 points (from 6.8). The other two years for which data is available the index stood at 6.2 in 2013 and 7.1 in 2018.

At EU level, the index is recorded as relatively stable in all four years for which data is available: 7.0 in 2013, 7.3 in 2018, 7.2 in 2021 and 7.1 in 2022.

Life satisfaction can be influenced by many factors, including age, education level, family and financial status, as well as a person's variety of experiences, choices, priorities, and values.

In fact, life satisfaction decreases steadily and gradually by age group as age increases. In the case of Cyprus it decreases from 7.6 (people aged 16 - 19), 7.5 (16 - 24) and 7.5 (16 - 29) to 7.5 (20 - 24), 7.4 (25 - 29 and 25 - 34), 7.2 (25 - 64 and 35 - 49), 7.0 (50 - 64), 6.9 (65 - 74), 6.8 (65 and over) and 6.6 (people 75 and over).

In the EU scores by age group start at 7.7 to 7.4 for the three youngest age groups and drop to 6.7 for those 75 and over.
