Cooperation for permits and building control

Issues concerning the Department of Urban Planning and Housing and the Department of Land Registry and recorded in the recommendations of the Commissioner of Administration, were examined.

In welcoming the meeting of the European Building Control Consortium, with the theme "Cyprus is changing - the new era in building licensing procedures".

The meeting of the European Building Inspection Consortium was organized by the Ministry of Interior in Peyia, between 13-15 October 2024, with the participation of representatives from 13 member countries of the Consortium.

In addition to the YPES, the President of the Association of Architects of Cyprus and Member of the General Council of ETEK, Alkis Dikaios, also spoke at the meeting, while Sonia Violari, Head of the Building Control Sector at the Paphos District Self-Government Organization, also participated.

According to an announcement by the Ministry of the Interior, the Minister also referred during his greeting to the reforms implemented by the Ministry of the Interior in this direction, while highlighting the challenges that are emerging at a technical and organizational level.

Besides, at the conference the Ministry of the Interior presented the new procedures applied by Cyprus in the context of the effort to modernize and simplify the licensing system.

Particular reference was made to the implementation of the reform of Local Government and the transfer of responsibility for the control of building development to the five EOAs, the introduction of electronic licensing and the effort being made to institutionalize the periodic inspection of buildings and improve the legislative framework that governs the handling of dangerous buildings.

Also, representatives of the Consortium member countries, as well as other interested countries, presented the latest developments from their countries in the field of building development and developed, both live and online, issues related to the simplification and acceleration of licensing procedures , the insurance of both buildings and the professionals involved, issues of safety, health and sustainability of the built environment, as well as the application of artificial intelligence systems for the automation of control.

"The conference offered an excellent opportunity for discussion and exchange of good practices between the members of the Consortium, and especially for receiving information with the aim of implementing in Cyprus more effective methods and tools in the process of building permits and control", notes the Ministry of the Interior in its announcement.
